Just a thought about this whole Vogel/Vigil thing…
I’m not invested in either band at all, nor am I really invested in the hardcore scene in any way, but from what I can see of what people say about what hardcore is all about, that same attitude can be applied to probably just about every genre of music that exists.
The whole point in music is to express yourself honestly, and to share that expression with others. This ideal is not exclusive to one genre, it’s a pretty worldwide concept that also exists outside the musical world too. Saying ‘hardcore is about this, and this band doesn’t represent that so they aren’t hardcore’ is really just an elitist way of saying ‘I really don’t like these guys’ attitudes.’ The latter is an excusable statement to make in my opinion, the former isn’t.
From having spent some time playing shows in different scenes, the hardcore scene is absolutely no different to the metal scene, or the rock scene, or any other original music scene I’ve been involved with over the years. The people that are there like the music and share that same passion, and yes, there’s politics, like in anything. But the core reasons for those people being there is the same.
I think being genre exclusive about it just shows how narrow your mind really is about music in general. Music in general, so long as it’s honest, is all about the same thing.
