"HOW IS AMERICA!!!!!!? I've been following your facebook updates! EXCITING!"

Asked by zoewakefield

It’s been so good! A lot of hard work; we haven’t had time to think about anything that aren’t the shows, but in saying that, the shows have been wicked, and the work is totally worth it for those 40 minutes we get to play on stage every night!

We have our first day off today, so we are finally able to sort out things like internet and RV maintenance. Plus enough time to eat properly too! Finding time to eat on this tour has been tricky so far…

"Do you think there is such thing as not 'deserving' gear? By that I mean, being at a skill (or commitment) level that may not really justify spending $2000 odd on a piece of equipment. Do you think good/decent gear can even help with advancing and inspiring progress or should i just hold out and improve my gear as I improve? (This is not just in the context of playing at home/live but also in regards to recording)."

In all honesty, if you have decided to take playing music seriously, you should just simply buy the gear you want to buy. It’s really important to develop a bond between yourself and your instrument, so shop around a lot, make sure your first professional level instrument is the exact one you want.

Good gear can definitely motivate you to play more, and inspire you to improve, absolutely. My PRS and my Ibanez BTB did exactly this for me, and as a result, I cherish those instruments more than anything in my collection.

ABSENT HEARTS BOOT SALE!

The K. Project - The Electric Sea - $5 - ONLY 12 COPIES REMAIN

Contact us at: weareabsenthearts@gmail.com if you would like a copy.

So, in searching through some old stuff, I found copies of my first solo record, ‘The Electric Sea’. I wrote and recorded this release when I was 17 years old, and it was my first album under the ‘K. Project’ moniker.

This won’t be for everyone, it’s ambient rock, but there is literally only guitar on this record, nothing else. I’m really just releasing this for the sake of it being somewhat of a collector’s item.

I’m going to be flying out to America as of tonight, so upon my return, I’ll mail these guys out to whoever got in first!

Thanks, and much love,

Scott

WA threat to split from Canberra

Reblogged from perthstreetlife

adonate:

PREMIER Colin Barnett says WA will split from Canberra if the Federal Government doesn’t reward the state for driving the national economy.

“That’s not a threat. It’s reality,” Mr Barnett said.

While he said a formal separation from the rest of Australia was not on the agenda, relations with Canberra would become “negligible” if revenue created in the state kept being shifted east.

And he said the ramifications would not just be for the national economy, but for the broader Australian society including sport.

“There would be very little relationship and the WA economy would be fully integrated as part of Asia,” he said.

“It’s a trend you may see over the next 20 years.”

Colin Barnett is by far one of the best leaders that this state and country has ever seen. It’s not often that you see someone standing up to their higher-ups and fighting for what is right, and what is best for their state and their people. It’s unfortunate that it has come down to this and of course our Premier wants nothing more than what is the best for our state, but I think that there is a very real chance that this will happen in the future.

You have got to be kidding, right? What benefit does Australia gain as a country from segregating WA from the rest of Australia? NOTHING. In fact, it just makes things harder at this point, having to make deals with the rest of the country for imports, having to fend for ourselves for things like education, health care, every federal benefit we have… You’d have to be fucking retarded to think segregating the state from the rest of Australia is a good idea. Jesus Christ.

On top of this, is Colin’s complete and utter lack of interest in anything that isn’t the mining boom. Colin is against the mining tax, which generates heaps of revenue towards renewable energy, and takes money only from those that make billions (and honestly, I don’t sympathise with these people at all). The arts get no support, the people themselves whinge about Perth’s lack of entertainment options and general culture, the fact that our city is so far spread because our premier has no interest in creating small, affordable housing central to Perth CBD… Why the hell build expensive, shoreline housing, when the money should go into more available, cheap land within the central areas? We have lots of families that have no choice but to live out in the middle of nowhere with really poor public transport options. Honestly, the list could go on…

"Bass guitar: Pick or fingers? Or both?"

Asked by Anonymous

It depends on what sound you’re after! I think it’s really important to be good with both, but obviously if you have a preference in sound, you’ll naturally draw to one of the two styles and be stronger suited with that.

Fingers will generally give you a smoother attack on the string, unless you have fingernails in which case it’s like having picks on the ends of your fingers! They are also far more dynamic; you can play incredibly soft with fingers, as well as super loud and punchy. I’ve always preferred  the overall sound of fingers, but in saying that, I don’t play punk music or other styles that are more suitable to pick playing.

Pick playing will give you heaps of attack and string noise. This is great if you are looking for a really present and driving bass sound. Punk and Thrash, you’re most likely going to want to play with a pick. If you’re good with the pick, you can quite easily get a consistently loud and punchy sound with each note.

Each has their own merits. I’ve always been more drawn to finger playing myself, because if you wanted that super punchy sound, you can actually use slap bass technique as another means of getting it.

Hope this helped!

Woo! As of today, I am an official endorsee of Ernie Ball Strings!
These strings are fantastic, and just recently they have released new cobalt alloy sets, which sound absolutely ferocious! I am really pleased to be a part of their team, and for letting me be a member of their ranks, it means a lot!

Thank you for that little comment, makes me feel a lot better! <3

"I don’t understand. If you and temp have written an album together (assuming Duncan and mike haven’t had anything to do with it) then why not launch it under a new band name. one where people don’t hate you? There is already so much negative comment going around about the split. If youre not using the band as leverage then why continue statues?"

The only negative comments I’ve seen have been coming from you, a mystery person from the internet who doesn’t have the courage to voice their opinion with their name attached to it. Mike and Duncan have been a part of the new songs by the way, so you’re assumption there is also completely incorrect. We wrote three of the four new songs we have at the moment with them on board, and they are more than happy for us to continue those songs on without them, which I’m very grateful for.

If you want a backstory, I can give you one, to maybe clarify how this whole thing started. Mike was talking to me about how he wanted to give harsh vocals a go for a band, so I decided as a friend, to write some original songs myself for him to put his vocals to. I wrote two songs myself, all the guitar, bass, and programmed drums, and we both worked on some of the vocals together at that point, as Mike needed some confidence boosting, as you would, trying something new. He improved heaps through this process, which was awesome.

Without blowing air up my own ass here, if it weren’t for us two working on those two songs together back then, Statues would have never come to be. With that being said, I have a lot of sentimentality to the band name, to the hard work every member of this band has put in so far, and as a result, the band name is staying.

We are still playing Statues’ music too. We will be playing Sanity, Wax Sealed, Pressure, Stay etc. at gigs, because we are still Statues. We aren’t a new band. Two people left, but we are still writing music that is similar in scope and style to what we’ve done previously. Things aren’t changing that much, other than having a new person on drums and a new person doing vocals.

I’ve already explained this to you in previous replies, I don’t see why it’s so hard to understand. No one person in this band dictated the style of what we did, it was a coming together of four minds. Two of those minds have changed to other people, and the band still maintains it’s overall identity. Yeah, it’ll change a little, obviously, but change happens in bands regardless of member changes, anything.

You are choosing to attack myself and Matt for reasons that you have no understanding of at all. I would really advise you stop accusing us for simply wanting to give the listeners, like yourself, the music we wanted to write for you. It’s incredibly unfair and actually really hurtful. If you know either myself or Matt, you would know how much we love playing music for you guys, which is our sole reason for continuing on through the hard times.
